Get your Kid’s involved in a Sustainable Future {Guest Post}

If you’ve decided to build a new home, there are a number of energy efficient solutions that you should consider. Not only are sustainable practices great for your power bills, but they will also help to create a more liveable environment for your children and grandchildren. While it is important that you do all that you can to create a green home environment, educating your kids and involving them in environmentally friendly activities around the house can further assist in creating a sustainable future. Whether you’re building a new house or have decided to implement some environmentally friendly practices into your home, check out these ideas for getting your kids involved and educated.

Composting

Introducing your kids to the idea of composting can help them to understand that even leftover foods have their place in the environment. When building your new home, consider the floor plans and layout of your backyard to determine an area for your composting bin. A composting bin can be bought from various hardware stores and is relatively inexpensive. Composting will not only help your children to understand that waste products can be reused, but will also teach them appreciation for the environment.

Planting

When deciding to build, you often have the luxury of creating your dream garden. Spending days filled with sunshine in your backyard is the perfect way to relax, while still getting your family involved too. Most children love to plant and participate in gardening, particularly when they get to pick their very first strawberry or tomato from the garden. Creating a garden that allows you to harvest your own produce and give your children understanding about the value of nature, is a lifelong lesson that they’ll always remember.

Recycling

Getting kids to understand recycling at a young age is an invaluable lesson. Parents can make recycling fun, by creating a colorful system in the kitchen and also by showing kids how to reuse products. After Christmas, for instance, parents can create fun activities to reuse greeting cards by cutting and pasting pictures to make fun new creations.

Fun Education

If you’re building a new home, a number of house and land packages now come with energy efficient inclusions, such as solar panels, water tanks, energy efficient lighting and water saving fixtures. Teaching your kids about how your house works and how you are helping to create a sustainable future can encourage them to become more involved. Create fun, educational activities about how the solar panels on your roof allow you to watch our favorite television shows. The possibilities are endless, so start your kids on a greener path today.

Instilling good values in your children from a young age will help them to understand the value and importance of creating a sustainable future. While you’re educating your kids, you’ll also have the opportunity to create fun family memories of days spent together in the sunshine.

The Honest Company Giveaway {$110 ARV}

I’m so excited to bring you another “Super Events” Giveaway! This giveaway is hosted by Full Price? Never! with contributing blogger CuzinLogic.

Just in time for EARTH DAY! This week we are happy to introduce you to The Honest Co.!

Meet The Honest Co: Launched in January 2012, The Honest Company offers an eco-friendly line of family essentials (diapers and wipes, bath and body care, and household cleaners) through a monthly subscription service at Honest.com.

Created by parents for parents, The Honest Company is committed to making safer products more convenient, beautiful, and affordable and to providing exceptional family support that promotes health, happiness and community. Learn more about the The Honest Co: Website, Facebook, Twitter Personal Review: Heather from Full Price? Never! had the pleasure of trying the first months collection of items, pictured below. Here are her thoughts ”I was immediately intrigued by The Honest Company as soon as a friend told me about them. As a parent I try to make as many healthy choices for my children as possible but I still take into account price and convenience and how well the products work. These reasons are what made The Honest Co so tempting to me. I love the idea of buying safe products, delivered right to my door automatically for a great price. When you receive your shipment from The Honest Co. it feels like you just experienced something fun… not that you just bought some household necessities. The package is adorable, {there I said it} and the shipping material is too! The products themselves are created so that you want to have them up on the counter in your kitchen or laundry room. You don’t want them hiding in a closet… they are pretty and functional. I used all of the products below and found them all to be of high quality and they delivered the results promised… which is why you buy them in the first place! Two of my daughters have very sensitive skin, but we still need to have clean clothes so I was interested to see how effective on both sides {gentle and clean well} the laundry soap would be… and it was a winner! Although I didn’t try the diapers, I really want to. I love that they are “plant based, ultra absorbant and fashionable” and maybe that they would ship me a whole month at a time right to my door automatically so I never run out {not that I’m saying that’s ever happened}. I love the way Jessica Alba explains in this video how important it is that we know what is in the products we use on our kids and make responsible choices.” Here’s the great part! The Honest Co. is providing this awesome prize for one lucky reader: A 3-month subscription of The Honest Company Family Essentials The first month’s bundle will include the following five products: Honest Shampoo, Body Lotion, Hand Soap, Healing Balm and Laundry Detergent. But for the other two months, you can choose any five products you like from the entire 14-product body care and cleaning line including Auto Dish Detergent, Hand Sanitizer, Sunscreen, Bubble Bath and Surface Cleaner. All products are non-toxic and made in the USA using all-natural and organic ingredients. Retail value approximately $110

This giveaway starts at 12:01am April 16th and ends at 11:59pm April 22nd EARTH DAY {est}! Must be aged 18 or older and live in the contiguous US to be eligible to win.

Tide’s “Take A Load Off” Facebook Sweepstakes

In honor of Earth Day, you can “Take A Load Off” the energy grid, your wallet, and the environment by making a simple change – washing your clothes in cold water. Did you know that heating water while doing laundry can account for up to 80 percent of the energy used per wash load in the U.S.? It’s an easy change to make with Tide Coldwater, which is specially formulated to get clothes clean in cold water.

I have talked about Tide Coldwater detergent before on my blog and shared how my clothes were just as clean using this product and washing in cold water as they were when I washed with hot water. The bonus of this detergent is that, not only does it save energy, but it saves a lot of money which everyone is looking to do these days!

Make the Promise to switch to washing in cold water on the Future Friendly Facebook page and you’ll be entered to win a High Efficiency Washer and Dryer and a one-year supply of Tide Coldwater! You can enter once a day to increase your chances of winning these awesome prizes. A new winner will be picked each week through May 13th so there are lots of chances to win. You can enter the sweepstakes here.

(Disclosure: I am being compensated by SheSpeaks, on behalf of Tide, as a featured blogger for this campaign but all thoughts are my own.)

Green Resolutions Giveaway Hop {Skoy Cloths & Oregon Chai Tea}

Welcome to the Green Resolutions Giveaway Hop, hosted by Happy Mothering, Mama Chocolate and Purposeful Homemaking! In addition to my green giveaway, there are an additional 40 blogs featuring eco-friendly prize packages. After you’re done entering my giveaway, please visit the other blogs, which you’ll find below my giveaway information. Good luck!

My two prizes for this giveaway are Skoy Cloths and Oregon Chai Tea. Both will go to one winner.

Skoy Cloths

(Review: coming soon)

“The SKOY cloth is a fabulous, absorbent, biodegradable and natural multi-use cloth.  Our re-usable earth friendly cloth is perfect in your kitchen, bathroom, and on most surface areas in your home or office.  SKOY cloth can be used in place of your sponge, wash cloth or paper towels.

The SKOY cloth is a durable product due to the reusability factor and can last months.  Using a SKOY cloth is equivalent to using 15 rolls of paper towels in an average home.  With the high cost of paper towels, as much as $2 per roll, SKOY cloth is the obvious choice for your wallet and the environment.

The SKOY cloth is long-lasting because of the wash ability feature.  It dries quickly, so it is not a breeding ground for bacteria.   It is also dishwasher and washer/dryer safe. Cleaning your SKOY cloth will keep it healthy and germ-free.”

Oregon Chai Tea Bags

(Review: coming soon)

“Oregon Chai Tea Bags are available in three varieties (of varying caffeine levels) so you can quickly and deliciously indulge yourself in Me Time—whatever the time might be.

Oregon Chai Tea Bags are made with premium, natural ingredients. Each box contains 20 tea bags. Go for The Original™ Chai Tea, a traditional blend of Assam black tea and chai spices. Go all out with Energía Herbal Chai made with Guayusa, Yerba Maté and chai spices. Or peace out with Dreamscape Herbal Chai, an infusion of Rooibos, Honeybush and chai spices.”

GIVEAWAY:

One person will win Skoy Cloths and a sampling of Oregon Chai Tea Bags.

The Gigglin’ Garden Gang #GoGreenNGiggle #CBias

I’ve been trying to become more “green” and really want to help my children learn earth friendly practices. I was excited for the chance to learn more about The Gigglin’ Garden Gang and their eco-friendly line of products. We received a “Go Green and Giggle Set” that included a book, CD, and garden activity kit inside of a tote bag.

Once we took everything out of the tote bag, Jacob wanted to “read” the book to us. He enjoyed looking at the pictures and making up stories about what was happening.

Next it was Daddy’s turn to read the book to Jacob and Lucas. Lucas liked flipping the pages and Jacob pointed things out as Daddy was reading.

After the story it was time to plant our seeds that came with the book. I liked that the directions were pictures so even my three year old who can’t read could tell me what steps came next.

Jacob poured water over the “magic” soil pellets and we watched as the pellets grew. The boys then planted the seeds. They both really liked this step. Lucas, my two year old, kept digging in the soil of the one he planted so Jacob planted the other five.

Once they were done planting the seeds we closed up the container and set it in a sunny spot away from little hands. We then went to listen to the  CD but it didn’t work {I think because our player is old}. I was bummed because I was really looking forward to watching Lucas dance to the music. He does kind of a hop, skip, twirl that is just adorable.

Since most children are visual learners I really liked how the website had pictures of the entire growing process from start to finish. This will be helpful when Jacob is asking questions about our plants because I can show him what will happen next and what our plants will look like in the end.

If you’d like to learn more you can visit The Gigglin’ Gang online. They can also be found on Facebook and on Twitter. You can read more about my experience and see more pictures in my Google+ story.

My Blog Is Now Green

carbon neutral offers and shopping with kaufDA.de

In honor of Earth Day being this week, I have decided to make my blog “carbon neutral”. You are probably wondering what in the world that means… I know I was when I first saw it!

What is a “green” blog and how can my blog become green? According to the website I found-

“My blog is carbon neutral” is an initiative, originally started in Germany by the “Make it green” programme, that has the goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We plant a tree for your blog and thereby neutralise your blog’s carbon footprint for the next 50 years! Everyone can make a small contribution to the environment. Every tree counts!”

Isn’t that awesome!?

To find out how you, as a blog or website owner, can join in click here.

To find out where they are planting the trees click here.

The trees will be planted soon so if you are going to join me in “going green” maybe this week would be the time to do it ;)
