This Is What Autism Looks Like In My Child {A Response To 50 Cent}

{UPDATE: On July 8th, 50 tweeted this: “I realize my autism comments were insensitive, however it was not my intention to offend anyone and for this I apologize.”}

Some of you may have heard of rapper 50 Cent’s recent comments on Twitter about Autism. I only heard about this today and as a parent of children with special needs, including a child with Autism, I am furious.

Here are the statements he made in response to someone who tweeted him:

‘yeah just saw your picture fool you look autistic’

‘I don’t want no special ed kids on my time line follow some body else’

{You can read the details over at the Huffington Post}

So in response to 50 Cent…

THIS is what Autism looks like in my son, Lucas

  1. holy crap…i mean some times one might say stupid things and regret it, but this was outlandishly mean and disgusting. My jaw is still dropped down that someone of his ranking in society would something so racist, bigoted, its not even a sterotype b/c autistic individuals dont even have characteristic physical features. What horrible words to say, need less to say i tweeted and will re tweet.

  2. What a jerk he is! But, what can you expect from a rapper? My adult son is severly schizophrenic and I hear and read jokes about schizophrenia all the time. It makes me so angry!Your son is beautiful!

  3. I like the angle of your piece. You could have stooped to his level but you didn’t. People have no idea what one day is like in your life, your sons and your family. It’s so easy to judge.

    I lost my son, Alexander and I constantly need to remind myself that generally, people mean well. They’re just so ignorant.

  4. Aaaw! I am so sorry that this was said. I agree that you have handled your response to it in a graceful way! Good for you!

    I, too ~ like Sarah ~ have lost a son and that loss has made me more sensitive to other’s pain. This situation honestly makes me want to cry but your response also gives my heart a lift. You are a wonderful Mom and your son is lucky to have you. God bless you and your delightful son. He looks so happy and carefree in those pictures. <3

    I hope you and your family are able to enjoy today together!

  5. I heard about his comments, and I just want to say two things:

    First, I agree with everyone else who says that your son is beautiful. He is, and anyone who says otherwise is blind.

    Second, people who make such asinine remarks are only revealing how uneducated they are.
